Why isn't my promo code working? Reasons and fixes

Why isn't my promo code working, and what should I do?

A promo code is usually refused for a reason written in its terms: a typo or a space, an end date that has passed, a first-order rule while your account has past orders, a cart below the minimum or holding excluded or reduced items, or another code or offer already on the order. Go through these reasons one at a time. If none fits, try another code from the store's page on Couponatcom, or contact the store's customer service with a screenshot.

Key points

  • Start with the easy part: make sure the code has no spaces and no wrong characters.
  • Read the code's terms: who it is for, the minimum, the excluded products and its end date.
  • Most noon codes are cashback, so the total does not move and the amount lands in your balance after delivery.
  • Sephora, iHerb and Styli accept only one code per order, so remove any code you added earlier.
  • If the code still fails, try another one from the store page, and keep a screenshot if you contact the store.

Is the code typed correctly, and is it still valid?

Start with the code itself, because it is the easiest thing to check. One extra space before or after the code is enough for a store to refuse it. So is a character that looks like another, such as a zero and the letter O. On Couponatcom, use the "Copy" button on the code card so the code moves over exactly as it is.

Stores do not agree on this point. Styli's help centre recommends pasting the code rather than typing it, while Nice One advises entering it by hand. So if Nice One refuses a pasted code, delete it and type it one character at a time.

Then look at whether the code is still valid. Every code has an end date, and after it the store refuses the code with a message such as "invalid" or "expired". Some codes also have a set number of uses. Some Styli codes work once, an iHerb code stops after its maximum number of uses, and an iHerb code that arrives in a personal email can be used a single time, by that email's owner alone. A store can also switch a code off early; ToYou's terms, for example, let it stop a code at any time.

Our code cards show the end date when it is known. An expired code leaves the live list on its end date and moves, struck through, to the bottom of the store page, where its row also stays in the code history, marked "Ended" with the date.

After pasting, tap at the end of the code box and make sure there is no space after the last character.

Is the code for a first order while you have ordered before?

Many codes are accepted only from people ordering for the first time. If your account has a past order, the code is refused. noon and Namshi both list this among their reasons, and some Styli codes work only on your very first order.

A store may know you have ordered before even when you open a new account, because some stores may look at your phone number, card or address. Temu's terms, for example, rule out multiple accounts opened to benefit from offers.

The fix is simple: look on the store page for a code marked "Returning customers" or "Everyone".

Does your cart meet the code's conditions?

This is where most refusals come from, and the reason is usually written in the terms:

  • The minimum is not reached: your cart total is below what the code asks for. Add something you really need, or pick a code with no minimum. At iHerb, products from brands left out of promotions do not count toward that minimum.
  • Excluded products: the code does not cover some sections or brands. Styli leaves out cosmetics and school items, and Mumzworld leaves out gift cards, milk, diapers and certain brands. Remove the excluded item and try again.
  • Items already reduced: some stores do not apply a code to products that are already marked down. At Nice One the discount applies to the other items only, so it looks smaller than you expected.
  • A code for one section: noon has codes for certain categories or products, and they will not work if your cart holds none of them.

If the code is accepted but the saving is smaller than you expected, look in the terms for the most the code will take off.

Is another code or offer already on your order?

Most stores do not combine two discounts on one order. Sephora, iHerb and Styli accept just one code. noon normally allows one offer per order unless an offer's terms say otherwise. At Nice One, a code can't be combined with a bank card or Apple Pay discount. At Al Majed Oud, some codes do not work alongside offers such as buy one, get the second free.

iHerb has two kinds of code: the promo code, and the Rewards code that shoppers send to other people. The two can't be used on one order; if you enter both, iHerb keeps the higher discount and drops the other.

The fix: remove the first code from the cart, enter the new one, and compare the total both ways. If a bank offer is on your order too, compare the saving from each on your cart and use the better one.

Are you on the right site and using an accepted way to pay?

Some codes are tied to where you order. A code a store publishes for Saudi Arabia may not work on its site for another country. Al Majed Oud has a different online store in each Gulf country, so make sure you are in the Saudi one. Namshi has codes that belong to its app, and they will not work if you order in a browser.

Some codes are tied to a way of paying. Al Majed Oud has codes for one payment method, and some noon offers ask for a specific payment method. If you change the payment method after entering the code, check the total again.

Other conditions depend on the steps of the order. At Namshi, codes do not show in the order summary until you confirm your mobile number. At Sephora, a gift code may be refused if you pick express delivery, same-day delivery or store pickup. And if the terms name a certain device or app, order from that one.

The code was accepted but the total did not change: is it cashback?

Sometimes a code works and you see no change at checkout. That happens with cashback codes: they do not lower the total, and part of the amount comes back to you after the order.

Most noon codes work this way. noon tells you at checkout that the code went through, and the amount lands in your balance after you receive the order. Namshi and ToYou have cashback offers too. ToYou sets the final discount by the actual delivery distance, so the figure you saw before ordering was only an estimate.

So do not judge the code before your order arrives. Open your account after delivery and check the balance. If the amount was not added, contact the store with your order number.

The code still does not work: what now?

If you have gone through every reason and found no fix, stop spending time on that code. Follow these steps in order:

  1. Open the store's page on Couponatcom and try another code. Pick one with the Checked mark and a recent "Checked on" date, and look at its trust score.
  2. Before you change anything in the cart, take a screenshot that shows the code, the error message and the items.
  3. Contact the store's customer service through its app or site, and send the screenshot, the code and its terms as you read them.
  4. If you already placed the order and the discount was not applied, keep the order number and the screenshot, and ask the store what it can do.

Make sure the discount shows before you press pay. Mumzworld will not apply the discount once you have paid with a wrong code.

Questions and answers

Does a refused code mean it is fake?

Not necessarily. Most refusals come from a condition that does not fit your cart or your account, such as the minimum or a first-order rule. The same code may work for someone else on the same day.

Why did the code work for my friend and not for me?

Because the terms look at your own account and cart. Maybe your friend was ordering for the first time and you were not, or their cart was bigger, or it held no excluded items. At ToYou, a code may be open to one user or one order and closed to another.

I placed a Sephora order with a code and want to change it: do I lose the code?

No, if you were signed in when you ordered. Sephora says you then have 15 minutes to cancel the order on its site, and the promo code comes back to you for a new order.

Do I lose the discount if I return part of the order?

At Styli, if you send back part of an order you paid with a code, the discount you got does not come back to you. At Mumzworld, you get back what you actually paid after the discount. Read the store's return rules on its page before you order.

Does a code work with cash on delivery?

At noon, the help centre does not rule it out in general, but some offers ask for a specific payment method. At other stores, read the code's terms, then check the total again once you pick how to pay.
